What came first; Smileys/Emoticons, or The Simpsons?

I was just wondering because Smileys/Emoticons have yellow skin and so do the Simpsons. So…yeah. The idea for yellow skin on the Simpsons might’ve come from Smileys…..

    If the smiley category also includes things like :) , then that pre-dates the Simpsons, computer nerds have been using the smiley-face thingy since the 80s. However, the yellow-smiley-face we have all come to know and ignore, has only been around for about 15 years.
